Renewal Information

  • You can take a code course on the newest code (2009) from an IAPMO instructor of at least four hours in length. They give you a certificate at the end of the course and you send that in with your renewal.
  • The second option is a 25 question open book test online.

Nevada Candidate Information Bulletin

General Qualifications for All Testing Applicants shall submit the following documents with their application and must be qualified as mandated by Clark County and the City of Reno:
  • Affidavit of Experience
  • Official Application
  • Applicable Fees (see application)
  • Valid Photo Identification
  • Test fee $125.00 (*There must be a minimum of 8 applicants for the written exam only for this price. Otherwise, the test fee is $250). No personal checks accepted. Online fee $125 (Contact NITC for approved NITC testing locations).
Specific Qualifications for Journeyman Plumber

All applicants must have four (4) years with 8,000 hours of substantiated experience in the plumbing trade.

Specific Qualifications for Master Plumber

No person shall submit an application for the Nevada masters test without showing proof of holding an NBOPE certificate as a Nevada journeyman plumber for a period of 2,000 hours.

For computer testing: Visit www.nationalitc.com for NITC approved testing centers. It shall be the applicant's responsibility to submit the application, affidavit and required fees to NITC. Please remit money order or cashiers check or credit card information only. Do not send personal check or cash. Once your application has been accepted, NITC will contact ACT testing centers. ACT will email applicants their confirmation, login and pin number to schedule testing. To locate an ACT center, go to http://www.act.org/actcenters/locate/. If the examinee does not show up to the exam appointment, there will also be a $65.00 rescheduling fee (this is and ACT charge).

Each successful candidate shall pass the Journeyman or Master Plumber examination with a minimum passing score of 75 percent.

Please submit your application, and the required fee to the address listed for NITC to the left. Examinations will be presented in the English language.

Note: Once your application has been accepted, you will receive an Admission Letter informing you of the date, time and location of your exam. Only accepted, pre-registered candidates will be admitted to the exam. Walk-in applicants will not be admitted. There will be no reciprocity of licenses from other states or agencies.

Individuals working in Nevada shall possess a Journeyman license issued by the Nevada Board of Plumbing Examiners.

Description of the Journeyman & Master Plumber Test:

A 50 question and answer multiple choice, open book exam will then be administered. There will be general questions from all chapters, illustrations, tables, charts and drawings. The time limit for this section is two (2) hours. The proctor will allow you a short break at the completion of the open book exam.

Applicants will be given a 100 question and answer, multiple choice, closed book examination. There will be general questions from all chapters, illustrations on DWV sizing, gas pipe sizing, storm drainage and water pipe sizing. The time limit for this section is one hour and forty-five minutes. After completing the test, the applicant must leave the testing facility and will not be permitted back in for any reason.

A multiple choice exam will be given to each applicant at the test location only. The test will be on the current adopted edition of the Uniform Plumbing Code (UPC). Successful applicants shall score a minimum of 75%. Successful applicants will be issued a color-coded picture identification card and certificate. Journeyman plumbers are required to carry his/her card during his/her work hours.

Misconduct: Cheating of any kind will not be tolerated. If it is determined that you are cheating during the exam process, you will be required to immediately surrender the testing materials and leave the testing facility. Your score will be recorded as zero percent and your test fee will not be refunded. Further, you will be ineligible to test for one year.

The Testing Day:
All applicants shall bring with them the following items:
  1. The 2009 edition of the Uniform Plumbing Code
  2. Admission Letter and a valid photo ID
It is suggested that you bring a hand held pencil sharpener, eraser, and a silent, battery-operated, non-printing, non-programmable calculator. (A non-programmable calculator that does NOT have a full alphabetical keyboard.) All other electronic devices are prohibited. (Examples: cell phones & palm pilots)

Note: Materials will not be available at the testing site. No handbooks, computers, notebooks, audio/visual devices, recorders, plumbing illustrated books, notes, drawings or papers of any kind will be allowed in the testing facility.

Friends, relatives and children will not be permitted in the testing facility. Please do not bring drinks or food. Smoking will not be permitted in the testing facility. Applicants will not be permitted to leave the testing facility until their exam is completed or test materials have been returned to the proctor.

Scoring:
Each test will be scored individually. Your score will be based on the number of questions you answered correctly. You will not be given credit for any answers not marked, left blank, or marked with more than one answer on the answer sheet.

For the written exam, your score will be mailed to you within 30 working days after the examination date. All scores are mailed simultaneously. To ensure confidentiality, examination scores will not be given over the telephone. For the computer based based exams, the results are given as soon as you finish taking the exam. Cards and certificates are mailed about a week later.

If you pass the examination, you will receive your certification card in approximately 30 days. If you do not pass the examination, you will receive information with your test results about retaking the exam.

Challenging Exam Questions or Answers
All questions, answers, and illustrations have been certified by a panel of plumbing professionals as to their correctness and accuracy to the 2009 UPC. Each question has only one correct answer. You are to select the best correct answer among the four possible answers.

If you believe a question or answer to be incorrect or you believe it is not in the 2009 Uniform Plumbing Code, we invite you to submit a Question and Answer Challenge. All challenges of questions or answers shall be submitted to the proctor before you leave the testing facility on the Question and Answer Challenge Form. All challenges will be submitted to the NBOPE and you will receive a written response within thirty days.

The Journeyman & Master Plumber Examination is based on the following content areas. Next to each subject heading is shown the approximate percentage of questions in the exam for that subject area.

The primary source will be the current adopted edition of the Uniform Plumbing Code published by the International Association of Plumbing & Mechanical Officials (IAPMO). You may purchase a copy of the UPC by calling IAPMO at (800) 85-IAPMO, or you may order online at www.iapmo.org.

Note: Complete application and all applicable fees must be submitted to NITC on or before the deadline date.

City of Reno Exams: Call NITC to sign up for the online exam at 877-457-6482.

For Reno Only: Renew all existing City of Reno cards for 2010 at the City of Reno offices at 450 Sinclair St., Reno (or mail to City of Reno, Community Development, PO Box 1900, Reno, NV 89505 along with a copy of your existing card, the correct fee and a self addressed stamped envelope for return mail). Those cards will expire 12/31/2010.

For 2011 card renewals only: Only 2010 City of Reno cards will be renewed. Send a copy of your application, a passport size photo, a copy of your drivers license and the required fee to NITC to get the new NBOPE card for three years. Members of the Associated Builders and Contractors (ABC), 240 S. Rock Blvd., Reno, NV (775-358-7888) or UA Local 350, 1110 Greg St., Sparks, NV (775-359-2142) may seek assistance from their respective organizations. NBOPE cards will be mailed to your address above. Apprentice cards will continue to be issued and renewed by the City of Reno.
