Journeyperson Plumber

Specific Qualifications / Requirements:

  • Four (4) years in a state registered, accredited apprenticeship or 8,000 hours of substantiated experience in the plumbing trade. Use the official NBOPE "Affidavit of Experience" for proof of experience.

Master Plumber

Specific Qualifications / Requirements: 

  • Holding a current and in good standing NBOPE certificate as a Nevada Journeyperson Plumber for a period of at least One (1) year or 2,000 hours.

Description of the Journeyperson & Master Plumber Exam

This exam is based on the most current adopted Uniform Plumbing Code (UPC) and consists of two-parts. The first part, is a 50-question multiple choice, open book exam. Questions for this portion have been derived from every chapter and various illustrations, tables, charts and drawings throughout the book. The time limit for this section is two (2) hours. Following a brief break, applicants will be given the second part of the exam. The second part, consists of a 100-question multiple choice, closed book exam. Questions for this portion have been derived from every chapter and various illustrations regarding DWV sizing, gas pipe sizing, storm drainage and water pipe sizing. The time limit for this section is two (2) hours. After completing the test, the applicant must leave the testing facility and will not be permitted to reenter for any reason.


Successful applicants shall score a minimum of seventy-five percent (75%) or one-hundred and thirteen (113) accumulative points on the exam. Successful applicants will be issued a color-coded picture identification card and certificate. Journeypersons are required to carry their picture identification card during work hours. This certification is valid for three (3) years from issuance.

Exam Scoring

Each exam shall be individually scored and will be based on the number of questions correctly answered. Answers not marked, left blank or questions with more than one answer marked per question will be not be given any credit.

When taking the exam on the computer, the results shall be provided at the completion of the exam.

When taking the written exam, the results will be mailed to the applicant within thirty (30) days of the examination date.

To ensure confidentiality, exam scores will not be provided by any other method. Any applicant that does not pass the exam will be provided with information to retake the exam.


Challenging Exam Questions or Answers

All questions, answers and illustrations have been certified by a panel of plumbing professionals as to their correctness and accuracy to the UPC. Each exam question has only one (1) correct answer and applicants are to select the most correct answer among the four (4) possible answers.


Applicants may challenge exam questions or answers they do not believe are correct through the Question and Answer Challenge Form. Applicants must utilize the form and submit all challenges to questions or answers to the proctor prior to leaving the testing facility. All challenge forms will be submitted to NBOPE and the applicant posing the challenge shall receive a response within thirty (30) days.

Exam Reference

The primary source will be the current adopted edition of the Uniform Plumbing Code published by the International Association of Plumbing & Mechanical Officials (IAPMO). You may purchase a copy of the UPC by calling IAPMO at (909) 472-4100, or online at iapmo.org.


Test Day

All applicants shall bring with them the following items:

1. The 2018 edition of the Uniform Plumbing Code

2. Admission Letter and a valid photo ID

It is suggested that you bring a hand-held pencil sharpener, eraser, and a silent, battery-operated, non-printing, non-programmable calculator, (A non-programmable calculator that does NOT have a full alphabetical keyboard). All other electronic devices are prohibited, (Examples: cell phones & palm pilots).

Note: Materials will not be available at the testing site. No handbooks, computers, notebooks, audio/visual devices, recorders, plumbing illustrated books, notes, drawings or papers of any kind will be allowed in the testing facility. Friends, relatives and children will not be permitted in the testing facility. Please do not bring drinks or food. Smoking will not be permitted in the testing facility.

Applicants will not be permitted to leave the testing facility until their exam is completed or test materials have been returned to the proctor.


Ways to Take an Exam

1) Local Prometric Test Center (On a computer)

2) Remotely Proctored Online Exam using Prometric’s ProProctor™ (On a computer)

Prior to scheduling a remotely proctored exam, review the ProProctor User Guide and confirm your computer’s compatibility to allow remote proctoring. Remote proctored online exams are offered using Prometric’s ProProctor™ application. For a remotely proctored exam, you must supply the computer which must have a camera, microphone and an internet connection and be able to install a lightweight app prior to the test event. You will be able to take the exam online while a Prometric proctor is overseeing the examination process remotely.


3) Group Examinations Conducted by Local Associations or Training Agencies (On a computer or paper/pencil)

Local Associations or Training Agencies conduct group exams periodically, typically when their apprentices are taking their certification exams. An applicant may contact the local associations to inquiry about their next group test and their availability to join in. If there is availability, note the date, location and association of the group test on the application to NITC. The method by which the exam is given (compute based or paper/pencil) is up to each individual agency.
